Remote work challenges were always around, but now they’re more in focus than ever. Although it was probably completely unimaginable for each of us 10 years ago that work from home was possible, today it is almost our daily routine. The expansion of working from home experienced its peak especially after the COVID-19 pandemic when most people were forced to work from home due to the lockdown. 

Most companies had to suddenly adapt to completely new working conditions. However, even after two years and the calming down of the COVID-19 situation, some of the big companies like Microsoft have introduced remote work as an option for their employees. Some companies work entirely remotely, like our company.

More recently, there is also the example of the Netherlands, which introduced work from home as a legal right for its citizens. 

All this tells us that remote work is increasingly the model of work all over the world. But apart from its many advantages, there are remote work challenges as well. In the following article, we will present some of them.

1. It is more difficult to separate work from private life

When it comes to keeping a good work-life balance, it can be one of those remote work challenges. After all, since everyone is far away, it’s impossible to tell who is staying up late and who is departing early.

The fact is that even when they are already at home, some people still struggle to switch out of “work mode” and relax. Unfortunately, this may cause your staff or even you to burn out.

2. Burning out

Remote team members who struggle to say “no” are frequently the first to burn out. These high achievers are prone to overworking and often give their all seven days a week, which is not sustainable and is certainly one of the remote work challenges.

Because you can’t see when it reaches that stage, you’ll need to be on the lookout for symptoms of staff burnout, such as:

  • Workplace negativity
  • Disconnection from colleagues and initiatives
  • Decreased efficiency

3. There is not much space for team building

Among remote work challenges, team building is not always talked about. How can you develop a team-building atmosphere if you can’t see or engage with your employees every day in the office? Of course, you could plan quarterly or annual getaways for everyone to get together as a group, but such are generally few and far between, not to mention difficult with the recent COVID-19 epidemic.

Creating a collaborative atmosphere in which employees feel secure in expressing their opinions can foster a feeling of community and make individuals feel like they belong.

4. Onboarding new team members

Your remote onboarding experience has the potential to make or ruin your hiring efforts. With the correct framework in place, new team members are trained on what to anticipate and what is required of them. They will become involved and driven right away since they will feel welcomed and like a part of the team.

A terrible onboarding experience, on the other hand, makes new workers feel excluded and isolated within their own silos. If this continues, they will begin to drift away and search for other opportunities, which makes this one of the bigger remote work challenges.

5. Employees are dissatisfied with their careers and personal development opportunities

It’s all too easy for remote workers to get caught up in the daily grind and lose sight of their professional objectives. If your staff concentrates solely on completing duties each week, they may not feel as if they are progressing in their roles or expanding their abilities, which is the antithesis of what you want as a company.
